HomeJr Program Overview

Los Gatos Rowing Club offers school year and summer programs for “Junior” rowers; youth who are in High School or Middle School.  Drawing from over 25 schools in the South Bay, LGRC athletes compete locally and nationally.  Our athletes have gone on to row collegiately and have represented the United States internationally at the Junior, Under 23, World Championship and Olympic level.

The High School Rowing Program is a school year program for grades 9 to 12. The season mimics the school year, starting in early September and running through the Southwest Junior Rowing Championships (SWRJAs) in early May. Depending on their finish at SWRJAs, some athletes will qualify for the Youth national Championships in mid-June.

The team is separated into Men’s and Women’s squads, and each squad consists of a Novice and Varsity team. The Novice team is for any first year High School athlete. The Varsity team is for any returning High School athlete that has completed their Novice season. Note that women may act as coxswains on the both the Women’s and Men’s squad.  The High School Program runs from September - May.  The Novice crews have open enrollment from September through the end of February.  Perspective Novice Athletes are encouraged to sign up for the 10 Day Trial period to see if they want to continue with the program.

The Middle School Program’s are 8-10 week programs that are held during the school year for athletes in grades 6 to 8.   We offer three Middle School programs, Middle School Program 1, Middle School Program 2, and Middle School Program 3.

Middle School 1 (MSP1)

MSP1 is a non-competitive program for all 6th and 7th graders regardless of previous experience and 8th graders who have never rowed before.  The program meets twice a week for 2 hours.  There is a fall and a spring session.  Coaches introduce young athletes to the different roles: rower and coxswain and allow interested athletes to try both.  MSP1 has limited enrollment and is often full.

Middle School 2 (MSP2)
MSP2 is a non-competitive program for 7th and 8th graders that have completed MSP1 or MSP2.  The program meets twice per week for 2 hours.  There is a fall and spring session. Coaches introduce young athletes to the different roles: rower and coxswain and allow interested athletes to try both.  MSP2 has limited enrollment and is often full.

Note: 7th and 8th graders who completed MSP1 in the fall are encouraged to move to MSP2 in the Spring.

Middle School Program 3 (MSP3)
MSP3 is an advanced Middle School Program that requires invitation by the Middle School coaches.  This is a non-competitive program for 8th graders with previous rowing experience that intend to row in High School.  They should have completed either MSP2.  MSP3 is by invite only.
